| It is generally acknowledged that organic agriculture can contribute to socio-economic and ecologically sustainable development. The market for organic products is growing and offers producers and exporters in the South opportunities to improve their incomes and living conditions. But what role does organic farming play in the poorer countries? Some current data are presented in this paper, based on the results of the annual global survey on organic farming carried out by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL in collaboration with the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements IFOAM. |

| Over the last decade the organic market in the EU has grown faster than the organic agricultural area, which raises the question to what extent organic supply chains function effectively. Therefore, this study investigated the creation and distribution of added value in a number of organic supply chains in different EU countries. The results of the case studies suggest that higher added value is created in organic compared to conventional supply chains. However, no evidence was found that the relative share of organic farmers in the total added value differs substantially from that of conventional farmers. | In this article, key area and operator data about organic farming in Europe and the European Union are presented. > In Europe, 11.2 million hectares were under organic agricultural management, constituting 2.2 percent of the agricultural area. Compared with 2003 (6.3 million hectares), the organic land has almost doubled. In 2012, the area increased by 0.63 million hectares or six percent. > In the countries of the European Union, there were almost 10 million hectares in 2012, constituting 5.6 percent of the agricultural land. | For the 18th FiBL survey on organic agriculture worldwide, data on organic agriculture were available for 179 countries. Since 1999, when the data collection started, at that time carried out by the German-based Foundation Ecology and Agriculture (SÖL), the number of countries included has more than doubled. The survey is funded by the Swiss State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO), the International Trade Centre (ITC), and NürnbergMesse, the organizers of the Biofach trade fair. | The study reflects on the role of sustainability certification in some of the most pressing issues in raw materials, horticulture and tropical (RaMHOT) value chains, namely farm income, market access, and rural development. It also highlights potential enabling factors and barriers, which facilitate or hinder positive impacts of certification, and provides recommendations for rendering certification schemes more effective in mainstreaming sustainability in the RaMHOT value chains. The report focuses on four crops: cocoa, cotton, sisal, and tea. Correspondingly, we focus on the following certification schemes: Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), Cotton made in Africa (CmiA), Fairtrade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance (RA) and UTZ. |

| The annual survey on organic agriculture worldwide shows that a wide range of data on the organic sector is available, but a number of challenges need to be tackled in order to increase data availability, quality, and comparability. These challenges include lack and incompleteness of data, classification issues, non-harmonised definitions and lack of consistency checks. In order to improve the situation a number of recommendations are presented including the expansion of data collection activities, the improvement and harmonisation of statistical processes, the implementation of quality checks, and the strengthening of the institutional framework for data collection. |
